COMMERCE CITY — Sebastian Giovinco had a goal and an assist in the second half to help lift Toronto FC to a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids in the first leg of their 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League round of 16 series at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Tuesday night.
Giovinco played provider to help the defending Canadian and MLS champion break the 0-0 deadlock in the 55th minute as Jonathan Osorio latched onto the Italian’s chipped cross and headed back across the face of goal.
In the 73rd minute, Giovinco added a brilliant insurance goal with a sublime side volley from 12-yards out, after Brazilian newcomer Auro Junior cut the ball back from the endline.
With the Rapids trailing 1-0, Jack McBean ran onto a deflected Edgar Castillo cross and raced in for the potential equalizer -- and his sixth all-time SCCL goal -- but TFC captain Michael Bradley did well to track back and pressure the 23-year-old forward into shooting wide.
Dominique Badji had the best opportunity of a scoreless first half, when he was slipped in on goal, but Toronto FC goalkeeper Alex Bono did well to make the save and coral the rebound
